How to Install New Fonts in Windows

It is always a happy occasion to find a beautiful new font. But what to do after you download it? How to install your new font? Here is a short hands-on tutorial to installing fonts in Windows.

Installing fonts in Windows is very easy.

Font files usually come compressed in a zip archive. So first of all, you need to unzip the archive.

Extract the Fonts

To do this either use a standalone program, such as the excellent 7-Zip — which is completely free and open source.

Alternatively, you can use an online service, such as WobZip.

Select the zipped file on your hard drive by clicking the Browse from computer button. And then click Uncompress.

WobZip will unzip the archive file for you.

You can then download the extracted files one by one by clicking on their names.

Install the Fonts

After the contents of the uncompressed zip file are available, you need to select the font files.

Authors of fonts usually add some information regarding copyright and authorship to the zip file. These are usually plain text files.

Font files usually have the following extensions: ttf (True Type font) or otf (Open Type font).

Open Windows Explorer (Win+E) and select all extracted and downloaded files with these extensions. After you selected the files, right-click on them and select Install from the drop-down menu.

Windows will now install all the selected fonts. After the installation process completes, you can immediately use all your new fonts — there is no need to restart Windows nor any already running software (such as Photoshop Elements).

If you wish to see how the font type looks before installing it, right-click on the font file and select Preview from the drop-down menu.

Windows Font Preview

If you are satisfied with what you see, click on the Install button within the Preview window.
