When I was first setting up stosu.com, I went on to create a presence for it on all popular social networking sites. It was very easy and straightforward to set up accounts on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and on other sites. But Google, for some reason, was a complete mess from a user experience perspective.
Google of a Mess
I created a Google Account. Under that account I wanted to create a business profile on Google+. However, Google required that I also set up a personal profile on Google+ at the same time. Even though I only needed a business account.
Then when I created a YouTube channel for stosu.com, Google automatically created another Google+ profile for the YouTube channel. And it was neither of the two profiles I already had, it was a third Google+ profile.
Then I tried to connect my Google+ business profile with my YouTube channel, but instead I ended up with a bunch of unnecessary YouTube accounts.
So, yesterday, the time has finally arrived to sort out this Google of a mess.
Summarizing Them All
By signing in to my Google Account and by clicking around in both Google+ and YouTube, I found out that I had 3 Google+ profiles and 3 YouTube channels. All kept under the same Google Account.
I had a personal profile:
Then I had a business profile:
And, finally, I had the business profile I was actually using:
This last profile was also redirected to my custom URL at plus.google.com/+Stosucom.
I also had three YouTube channels — one for each Google+ profile.
A channel at:
was connected to my Google+ personal profile at:
Another channel at:
was connected to my unused Google+ business profile at:
And, finally, I had the channel I actually needed:
which was redirected to my custom URL at www.youtube.com/user/stosucom.
But this last channel was wrongly connected to my Google+ personal profile at:
What I wanted to do was delete the two extra Google+ profiles and the two extra YouTube channels, none of which I needed.
Also, I wanted to connect these remaining two.
How to Move YouTube Channels
Step 1 — Settings
First of all, I signed in to my official YouTube channel.
I clicked on the
Then, I clicked on the
Step 2 — Advanced
This way I arrived to my YouTube
There I clicked on the
Step 3 — Move Channel
Before you can move a channel, you will be prompted to re-enter your Google Account password. Just to make sure that the importance of this decision fully grabs your attention.
Step 4 — Select Profile
After you re-enter your password, click on the large blue button called
Now you will be able to see all the Google+ pages and profiles which are kept under the Google Account you are current signed into.
As you can see, the YouTube channel with the custom URL (
www.youtube.com/user/stosucom) was connected to an incorrect Google+ profile.
All I had to do now was click on the correct Google+ profile which was listed last —
To move the YouTube channel to another Google+ profile, make sure you click on the
Step 5 — Approve Changes
Google will warn you, if the Google+ profile is already connected to another YouTube channel. And that this other YouTube channel will be deleted once you establish the new connection.
Click on the red
You will be then presented with a visual confirmation of the move you are about to make.
Click on the blue
Then, you will have to confirm that you understand the changes to your YouTube channel which are about to happen.
Click on the blue
Your YouTube channel will then be moved to the correct Google+ profile.
Step 6 — Recap
I have achieved two things.
First, my custom URL Google+ profile at
plus.google.com/+Stosucom was now correctly connected with my custom URL YouTube channel at
Second, one of the unnecessary YouTube channels, namely
www.youtube.com/channel/UC7rsqDnMl3wUntJKxfZzvJw, was closed down.
How to Delete Google+ Profiles
Now I only had to delete two unnecessary Google+ profiles and be done with sorting out this mess.
Step 1 — Dashboard
To delete a Google+ profile, sign in to Google+ and go to your Google+ Dashboard.
To get to your Google+ Dashboard, click on the blue
Alternatively, you can go directly to business.google.com.
You can also click on your
Your Google+ Dashboard is located in the upper left corner of your page.
It is a menu that rolls down automatically when you hover your mouse over it.
Within your Google+ Dashboard menu, click on
Step 2 — Delete Page
Scroll down to the very bottom of the
You will then be served with a very lengthy explanation of everything that will be irreversibly removed, including all connected Google services, such as YouTube.
Step 3 — Confirm Deletion
Which is great because that is exactly what I want to do.
So, tick all boxes and click on the blue
You will be asked to confirm deletion altogether three times.
Just keep clicking on the
Step 4 — Recap
I had to repeat this deletion process twice, because I had two unnecessary Google+ profiles created.
When I deleted the
plus.google.com/112719874515518636489 Google+ profile, the unnecessary YouTube channel at
www.youtube.com/channel/UCpHpYhzU7tnzIjpQIdHz6Dg was deleted with it at the same time.
Then I deleted the only unnecessary Google+ profile that remained at
plus.google.com/100571489724776375498. This profile had no extra YouTube channel connected to it anymore, because I deleted that channel when I moved my YouTube channels.
The whole process of getting rid of unnecessary Google+ profiles and YouTube channels took about an hour.
But as a result I ended up with only what I really needed to begin with:
- one YouTube channel with a redirection to my custom URL:
www.youtube.com/channel/UCu23-qenYOsIfuQ1bdQsl8Q -> www.youtube.com/user/stosucom
- one Google+ business profile with a redirection to my custom URL:
plus.google.com/116534750030774900123 -> plus.google.com/+Stosucom
And both these services are now connected to each other.
Google has some support resources available where you can read up on how to delete Google services:
Google is slowly learning how to make things more user friendly.
Now I understand their Google+ and YouTube profile management systems. A great step ahead for the both of us.
