Windows comes with certain software components which are supposed to make Windows users more productive. Among these programs are Notepad, Sticky Notes, the Calculator, or the Command Prompt. But if you really want to do productive work in Windows, you can’t rely on these default programs.
While the above-mentioned programs are able to do some things, there are free replacements available which are much better.
Here is a list of tools I like to use instead of Windows’ default programs:
|Default Windows program||Free replacement software|
|Calculator||SpeedCrunch or Tabby Calc Portable|
|Command Prompt||ConEmu or Console|
|Disk Cleanup||BleachBit or Ccleaner|
|Paint||GIMP or GIMP Portable|
|Sticky Notes||Stickies or Stickies Portable|
|Uninstall a program||Revo Uninstaller Free or Revo Uninstaller Portable|
|Windows Media Player||VLC Media Player|
|Windows Search||Everything Search Engine|
|Windows Zip Compression||7-Zip or 7-Zip Portable|
|Wordpad||Libre Office, Open Office or Open Office Portable|
These replacements are more feature packed, more user friendly, visually better designed, and overall more up-to-date than their default Windows counterparts.
All the listed replacements come in a portable version, too. Many of them are also open-source. And best of all, all of them are completely free.
